<p>The first suicide I was able to stop was the year after I<br />
got my doctorate degree from Baylor University in 1976.  My<br />
client was African-American, attractive and talented, like<br />
Whitney Houston. She had been raped, beaten and left to die<br />
in a back alley in North Philly.</p>
<p>Self-destructive behaviors can take many forms. Hating<br />
yourself can range from being passive with your partner,<br />
to overeating, to suicide.</p>
<p>The more you become aware of what is going on in your<br />
unconscious, the better chance you have of not being<br />
self-destructive. That is, if you don&#8217;t really want to be<br />
self-destructive.</p>
<p>Self-destructive behaviors are not missing from the rich<br />
and famous.  Many talented people like Whitney Houston<br />
suffer with self-rejection, self-hate and end up killing<br />
themselves one way or the other.</p>
<p>We could debate forever if Whitney Houston really meant<br />
to kill herself.  However, the reality of how she related<br />
to her body and her emotional self is proof that she did<br />
not love her body and her emotional self.</p>
<p>The unconscious parts of you, such as your emotional self,<br />
will kill you one way or the other if you do not provide<br />
what your emotional self needs. I know this is a very<br />
strong statement.</p>
<p>However, consider the possibility that this emotional<br />
health truth, based on energy awareness, explains the<br />
behavior of famous people like Whitney Houston and<br />
Michael Jackson.</p>
<p>Whitney Houston did not ever find, accept and follow her<br />
authentic emotional self.  She did not heal her past<br />
emotional wounds so that she could have healthy, loving<br />
relationships.</p>
<p>Whitney Houston did not learn how to love who she really<br />
was inside and for real.  Instead she rejected who she<br />
really was inside and for real.  Therefore, she did not<br />
give her emotional self what she needed in order to<br />
become emotionally secure.</p>
<p>You need to consider the possibility that this emotional<br />
health truth also explains your behaviors that continue<br />
and persist even though they do not serve you well.<br />
Just think, you could get better results if you looked<br />
inward and meet your emotional needs.</p>
<p>We do not know if Whitney Houston lacked emotional<br />
health information, effective professional help or<br />
personal courage.  Did she even look in her unconscious?<br />
I don&#8217;t know.  However, from my point of view, it is<br />
profoundly sad that so many people still do harm to<br />
themselves when they could learn to love themselves.</p>
<p>You have access to the emotional health information you<br />
need to find, accept and love your emotional self.  You<br />
will reap big dividends if you become emotionally secure.</p>
<p>Holistic Health Professionals: If you do not love your<br />
emotional self, you cannot show others how to love their<br />
emotional self.  You need to heal your past emotional<br />
wounds in order to be effective with your clients.<br />
Staying in the emotional vibration is a skill that you<br />
need to learn. There are millions of people in need of<br />
an emotional safe place to heal.</p>
<p>Parents on the Personal Growth Path: You need to learn<br />
how to love your emotional self so that you do not pass<br />
on your unconscious issues to your children.  All of your<br />
unconscious issues will pass on to the next generation,<br />
unless you actively do something to stop this automatic<br />
transfer. Begin by looking in your unconscious.</p>

<p>Love. Looking at this four letter word right now could be<br />
good for your health.</p>
<p>We know for sure that saying loving words out loud is good<br />
for your health.  Masaru Emoto&#8217;s experiments with water<br />
crystals and rice reveal how much the energy of words<br />
affects matter.</p>
<p>For example, he conducted an experiment with the help of<br />
Japanese children.  He had the children say loving words to<br />
a jar of rice in one room.  And in another room he had them<br />
say nasty words to the rice in the jar.</p>
<p>The rice that had been exposed to loving words stayed fresh<br />
and alive for a long time.  The rice that had been exposed<br />
to nasty words quickly became black and rancid.</p>
<p>Just imagine how much you could benefit from saying more<br />
loving words.  Yep, visualize how good it will feel when you<br />
shift out of saying nasty things to yourself into saying<br />
loving things to yourself.</p>
<p>Imagine what will happen to your relationships with others<br />
when you say loving things to people instead of being<br />
suspicious, judgmental and arrogant.</p>
<p>Valentine&#8217;s Day is a reminder to be more loving.<br />
Love, love, love.</p>
<p>Listen to how many loving thoughts and words you say to<br />
yourself from now until Valentine&#8217;s Day.  Notice the results.</p>
<p>No matter what the results are, you can definitely learn how<br />
to stand up to your Inner Critic and tell this part of you<br />
to get in the back seat.  After all, your brain is only a<br />
tiny part of your wholistic, authentic, strong, self.</p>
<p>Holistic Health Professionals:  Does your Inner Critic<br />
interfere with your healing work with your clients? Probably.<br />
Become more aware of your thoughts, words and energy.  Learn<br />
to de-fang your Inner Critic so you can show your clients<br />
how to say more loving words to themselves and accept more<br />
loving energy from others.</p>

watching every move you make.  Anytime they hear you<br />
criticize yourself, they are learning to criticize<br />

<p>The New York Times is running a series of articles on<br />
anxiety symptoms, signs of anxiety and anxiety attacks.<br />
One in five Americans admit they suffer from anxiety and<br />
the New York Times is beginning to understand that<br />
&#8220;anxiety is not a disorder, it is part of the human<br />
condition.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last Sunday in the Times, Alissa Nutting, author of the<br />
short story collection, &#8220;Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls‚&#8221;<br />
and creative writer teacher at John Carroll University<br />
wrote an article called, &#8220;An Appointment with Dread.&#8221;</p>
<p>She bravely shares her inner, anxious world.  Picture this.</p>
<p>On the outside, Alissa looks fine. She is sitting in the MD<br />
office waiting to be seen.  The average person would not<br />
know Alissa is feeling anxious because she looks just like<br />
everyone else, and besides, she is pretty.</p>
<p>However, on the inside, Alissa is freaking out.</p>
<p>Alissa describes how she feels as she walks down the hall to<br />
the medical examining office. &#8220;Although this feels like an<br />
emergency, when we pass a fire extinguisher, I do not break<br />
the glass. I would like to, though. I would like to activate<br />
an alarm and run.&#8221;</p>
<p>How often do you feel like something is an emergency and<br />
you know it is not a real emergency?  This feeling of urgency<br />
and anxiety IS part of the human condition.</p>
<p>For example, are you the kind of person who has to jump up<br />
and do something as soon as you think about it?  Your sense<br />
of emergency forces you to complete a task as soon as you<br />
think about the need to complete a task.</p>
<p>You have trouble relaxing, resting, and being in the moment.<br />
You do not trust that you will complete all tasks as needed,<br />
when needed.</p>
<p>This urgency that something is an emergency when it is not,<br />
is very important to tease out, address and unlearn.</p>
<p>As a child, you learned to be anxious about all sorts of<br />
things.  As you grew up, many of your anxious behaviors<br />
became very unhelpful and ineffective.</p>
<p>As an adult, you have trouble relaxing, resting and being in<br />
the moment.  Anxiety is the reason you do not have more<br />
vibrant moments of being alive, happy and full of yourself.</p>
<p>Begin to recognize your sense of urgency, which is your<br />
anxiety.  Then address the real issue.</p>
<p>Do not follow in Alissa&#8217;s footsteps of getting more medication<br />
from physicians to mask the psychological problems that you<br />
have.  Instead, address your real mental health, emotional<br />
health and sexual health problems.</p>
<p>You need to unlearn all the behaviors that push you to do<br />
something right now, in a certain and just so. Your pushy<br />
behaviors are anxious behaviors. They are keeping you from<br />
relaxing, being healthy, making love and enjoying life.</p>
<p>Holistic Health Professionals:  Are you in the process of<br />
unlearning your anxious behaviors from the past?  If not,<br />
your anxiety is coloring your world and blocking your personal<br />
growth.  Your anxious behaviors are also stopping you from<br />
being more successful with your clients who have anxiety<br />
symptoms, signs of anxiety and anxiety attacks.</p>
<p>Parents on the Personal Growth Path: You too, need to unlearn<br />
your anxious behaviors from the past.  Then you will model<br />
relaxation, effectiveness and self confident for your children.<br />
Always remember, whatever you do is what your children learn.<br />
Help them learn relaxation and self-confidence instead of<br />
pushy, urgency behaviors that gives them signs of anxiety.</p>

was experiencing guilt about something he had done in his past.<br />
He continued to relive a certain childhood event over and over<br />
in his head, making himself feel bad and wrong about what he<br />
had done.</p>
<p>He thought guilt was his problem. Yet after reading his<br />
question and sensing his energy, I was not sure that guilt was<br />
his problem.</p>
<p>Here is my answer:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no need to suffer and punish yourself anymore about<br />
your childhood behavior.  As a matter of fact, you may or may<br />
not be suffering from guilt. I would have to do a private<br />
consultation with you to tell for sure.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;However, from what I pick up, guilt is not your real problem.<br />
In a situation like yours, it is not so much what happened, as<br />
what you are doing with what happened.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Look at what you are doing with what happened.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Your current behavior has to do with your psychological state<br />
which does not appear to be guilt.  Your current energy state<br />
is obsessive.  You are obsessing about your behavior.  Your<br />
obsessive behavior could be dramatically improved with more<br />
knowledge, information, awareness and the appropriate mind-body<br />
skills.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apply this man&#8217;s situation to your personal growth.</p>
<p>You may think that guilt is your problem when it is not.</p>
<p>Look at your process to learn more about your bottom-line,<br />
heart-line issue.</p>
<p>Your problem could also be how you are using what you have done<br />
in the past.  Look  at your process to learn more about the<br />
source cause of a problem. How are you using certain events<br />
in your life.   Are you obsessing about them?</p>
<p>Obsessive behaviors in any form are the result of high anxiety.<br />
Anxiety is what makes people repeat thoughts, events and<br />
behaviors.</p>
<p>It does not matter what you obsess about, you need to reduce<br />
your anxiety so you can relax and enjoy your life.</p>
<p>Professionals:  Are you paying attention to process instead of<br />
symptoms, words, thoughts and behaviors? If not, learn more<br />
about process and how it can help you help your clients.</p>
<p>Parents: Do you take your own behavior and your daughter&#8217;s<br />
behavior at face value? Or do you look at the process of what<br />
was happening before the defensive reaction occurred?  Look at<br />
what happened before the unhelpful behavior occurred to find<br />

<p>Motivation is the energy that moves you forward and makes<br />

<p>Therefore, you need to learn how to overcome anxiety and<br />
face your real fears. These two skills must be in your<br />
self-improvement toolbox for any personal growth and<br />
professional success.</p>
<p>However, you also need to pay attention to your motivations.<br />
You may have motivations that you are not aware of that are<br />
seriously effecting your results.</p>
<p>Take a look at what really motivates you.</p>
<p>Are you motivated by:<br />
• Money?<br />
• Love?<br />
• Relationships?<br />
• Avoiding Pain?<br />
• Candy?<br />
• Success?<br />
• Peace of Mind?<br />
• God?<br />
• Failure?<br />
• Avoiding Conflict?<br />
• Freedom?</p>
<p>All of these &#8220;goodies&#8221; can be used to get your human<br />
energy moving in a stronger fashion.  Some of these<br />
&#8220;goodies&#8221; will move you toward unfulfilling professional<br />
goals and some will move you toward unfulfilling personal<br />
growth goals.</p>
<p>I am not kidding.</p>
<p>Your motivation for avoiding pain could be stronger than<br />
your motivation for success.  Your motivation for money<br />
could be stronger than your motivation for love.  Your<br />
motivation for candy could be stronger than your motivation<br />
for peace of mind.</p>
<p>When you look at the results you are getting, know that your<br />
motivation is definitely taking you to where you want to<br />
go&#8230;consciously or unconsciously.</p>
<p>You do not have to let your unconscious take you to a goal<br />
you do not desire.  All you need to do is become aware of<br />
what really motivates you.</p>
<p>Expand your awareness and make better choices to get the<br />
results that your heart desires instead of the results that<br />
your ego desires.</p>
<p>Professionals:  Are you stuck in the same ole routine?<br />
Overworked? Not enjoying your clients?  Regroup and get more<br />
into your heart&#8217;s motivations and less into your ego&#8217;s<br />
motivations.  Get the holistic psychology training, energy<br />
awareness and emotional support you need to reach your<br />
highest professional goals.</p>
<p>Parents: Do you find that you are more concerned about what<br />
others think than you are about your child and what he or she<br />
needs? Don&#8217;t let outside factors make you control, inhibit and<br />

or her needs in this anxious, crazy, out-of-balance world.</p>

<p>A reporter sent me a series of questions to answer on the<br />
physical effects of falling in and out of love for an article<br />
she was writing.</p>
<p>One of her questions was, &#8220;What exactly causes the<br />
“butterflies” and “sweaty palms” when people fall in love?<br />
Is that real or not?&#8221;</p>
<p>My answer:</p>
<p>&#8220;Yes, these physical experiences are real. Your body reacts<br />
to everything that is going on inside and outside of you all<br />
the time. Your body is the best barometer you have for knowing<br />
what is really happening in physical reality.&#8221;</p>
<p>For example, “butterflies” and “sweaty palms” occur when you<br />
are anxious.  These physical effects often happen to you before<br />
you give a speech, when you are in a new situation, when you are<br />
in an airplane and so on.</p>
<p>What you need to know is the feeling of love is not causing your<br />
physical reactions of anxiety.  It is most important to sort out<br />
the difference between love and the fear of love.</p>
<p>It is your fear of love that causes you to have butterflies in<br />
your stomach.</p>
<p>Your fears of intimacy cause you to experience sweaty palms.<br />
You may feel insecure about the possibility of falling in love.<br />
Perhaps you are afraid of being vulnerable and open.</p>
<p>You are thinking thoughts like this:<br />
&#8220;Does she like me as much as I like her?”<br />
&#8220;Oh no! I will get hurt if I fall in love.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;I can&#8217;t let him know how much I like him. He will run away.&#8221;</p>
<p>When you are in love your body reacts very differently.</p>
<p>You are feeling love and not thinking anything. Your body is<br />
relaxed, open and soft when it is in the energy of love.</p>
<p>Real love makes you feel secure, accepted and calm. You are glad<br />
to have a person to love and be loved by.</p>
<p>If you are afraid of love, now is the time to learn how to face<br />
your fears and overcome your anxiety.   It will be good for your<br />
mental health, emotional health and physical health to learn how<br />
to spend more time in the physical state of love.</p>
<p>PROFESSIONALS:  If you are not using body awareness and its<br />
physical truths in your work, you are not using the most powerful<br />
tools you have to help your clients transform their fear and anxiety<br />
energy into love energy.  Engage in continuing education to learn<br />
how to include the body and its truths in your psychological work.</p>

<p>Two weeks before Thanksgiving, an older client of mine was<br />
upset because her son and son-in-law had a long history of<br />
fighting and ruining every holiday dinner.</p>
<p>The situation had reached a standoff so that the two of them<br />
would not attend the same event.  My client did not know what<br />
to do.</p>
<p>For years, I had been supporting her in maintaining healthy,<br />
loving relationships with both of them.  During our session,<br />
she had the brilliant idea of bringing in her son for a<br />
consultation to see if we could get him to feel more<br />
emotionally secure and self confident.</p>
<p>Sure enough, helping her son feel more love was enough to<br />
bring about dramatic changes in the whole family dynamic<br />
during Thanksgiving Day.  Unbelievably, everything went<br />
well, no blow-ups, verbal attacks or dramatic departures.</p>

resentment. These psychological qualities create energy that<br />
is not physically or mentally healthy for you.  Therefore,<br />
you do not want to stay stuck in the energy of guilt,<br />
judgment or resentment for very long.</p>
<p>Gifts do not have to be &#8220;shoulds&#8221; and they do not have to<br />
cost a lot of money. For example, if you make your gift, it<br />
does not have to cost you anything. If you give a meaningful<br />
gift it does not have to cost you more than you need to spend.</p>
<p>If you are being controlled by &#8220;shoulds&#8221;, shift gears.</p>
<p>Move out of your brain down into your heart.  Feel the love<br />
you have for the person you want to give something to. Then<br />
let your creativity come into play.</p>
<p>Be creative instead of anxious.</p>
<p>Let new ideas come into your awareness.<br />
Relax and allow new information to come your way.<br />
Make a fun Christmas gift for a loved one.<br />
Give a gift that is meaningful and helpful.</p>
